Multicultural…. yeah, sure!

A very strange thing about Riyadh is the way people live within almost closed communities. Although there is quite a number of nationalities, I can’t get myself to saying it’s a multicultural community.

A multicultural community as I understand it is a community where people from various nationalities and backgrounds live together as one whole community. But what’s happening here in Riyadh is that people of the same background stick together and are sort of isolated from others.

An Irish friend of mine told me he believes the Americans to be the reason of this. They were the first (or of the first) foreigners to come to Saudi Arabia, and immediately they formed their isolated community inside their isolated compounds.

I tend to believe him. Especially after hearing a lot of stories about how Americans try to keep it cocooned and cozy. One story is of a manager of an American school who directs new staff to “never leave the compound unless it is a huge emergency”. I would like to tell this idiot that Saudis, Jordanians, Palestinians, Lebanese and all the other nationalities stopped eating men a long time ago!!!

Maybe the only multicultural community in Riyadh are the Palestinians and the Jordanians. But then again, they share ONE culture... furthermore they are already ONE community!

Well, I just miss Amman sooooooooo much!

Nice article. But I don't think this is happening only in Riyadh. Most of the big cities are the same. Maybe it is obvious in Saudi Arabia because of the compounds but believe me; in other places there are hidden compounds.

DAR: Thanx for passing by. I wish I can come back to Amman, the weather here killed me!

Hussainy: Hala 3ammi, I know what you're talking about my dear friend. And I agree.
